How has your career unfolded and how did participating in 21CL help prepare you for your next steps, going to college, taking on a new leadership role in community/college and after?
Throughout my high school years attending 21st Century Leaders (21CL) programs, I was able to grow as a leader, shape my communities, and bring a positive light on individuals’ lives around the globe. Since graduating high school, I have been able to utilize the vital skills of leadership, communication, and collaboration that I learned through the various programs and opportunities offered by 21CL to catalyze my leadership journey at university where I am currently a 2nd-year undergraduate student at Georgia Tech (BSc. in Biology).
The opportunity to serve as a Youth Ambassador for 21CL during my high school years sharpened my leadership skills and prepared me to engage in numerous leadership opportunities at college; within just one year, I have served as a leader of the Georgia Tech Honors Program, was a leader of the Student Alumni Association (SAA), and involved as an Undergraduate Research Ambassador. Most importantly, participating in 21CL allowed me to develop vital professional networking and leadership skills that helped me to create meaningful change in my local communities and forge lasting connections with my peers, mentors, professionals, and individuals from various backgrounds.
What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peer, speaking in public for the first time, etc.)
My memorable “aha” moment is when I participated in the Summer Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI) at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. This summer program was one of the first opportunities that helped me grow my expertise in public speaking and networking with others, strengthening my passion to voice my mind against modern issues through advocacy, leadership and service.
Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how?
Transitioning into my journey as a college student, 21CL helped me develop a leadership style by teaching me how to lead with confidence while also valuing collaboration and diverse perspectives. 21CL also gave me practical opportunities to apply these skills, which strengthened my ability to adapt and connect with others as a leader. That’s my leadership style inspired by 21CL!
Why do you believe programs like 21CL are important? And what advice would you give to a current or future student?
Ultimately, leadership programs like 21st Century Leaders are highly important, as 21CL enabled me to immerse myself in an interconnected community where my passions, strengths, and personal growth could flourish.
My advice for current and future students interested in joining 21CL is to take every opportunity 21CL offers and never be afraid to venture beyond your limits, as one can grow as a leader and achieve your greatest aspirations. As a proud 21st Century Leaders alumna, I will carry forward its legacy by creating a lasting impact on the world and inspiring future generations to lead with purpose and vision.
